Forum: GratefulDead Subject: GD more covers than original material?

I was just on whitegum.com/intro.htm (a fantastic website) and when I did a search for GD originals vs. GD covers - to my surprise I discovered that more than 60% of all GD songs are covers! (like 318 songs). The Dead wrote only 184 songs.

I found that surprising and intriguing.

Why should writing 184 songs be qualified with "only"? I've been playing guitar for 25 years and have only written two. I perform a dozen unknown songs, written by friends, and in a band whom I've played with for five years, where we have performed 10-12 "original" songs - mostly songs written by bandmates dating from previous bands.

How many other bands/artists can lay claim to such a prolific catalog as the GD?

Why should versatility be a negative?
Any live performing act plays tunes written by others.

Most shows that I can think of, they played more originals than covers. They're not the Radiators or anything. 184 originals, many of which are superb songs, is a great body of work.

WEll said McGanahan....tunes like 'Know you Rider' and 'Lovelight', it no longer matters who wrote them,...the dead just Own them.

TRU DAT. All of the top GD songs I love they wrote, not others.
